Chapter Twenty

The sun had begun to set by the time the refugees from my penthouse ventured into Henry’s church. Boy, you should have seen the look on his face when he saw me enter with more people looking to wait out the coming shit storm.

I made sure not to mention Belyana would turn into Anastasia in a few hours and go searching for a sexual partner to feed on. Don’t ask me how we’d handle that problem. The Kitsune Yukiko told me she let Anastasia feed on her while we were gone. Thing was when I looked behind after entering the church, Yukiko was gone. I could have sworn she made the trek through the snow and ice with us.

“Reika …” Henry said as the penthouse refugees moved past him.

“Sorry, preacher.” I shrugged. “This is the only safe place in the city.”

“You guys are turning this from a place of God to a military and demon refugee camp!”

Back in the rear room, I grabbed some enchanted guns and bullets Henry had lying around, not that they’d do much against the fae. But bullets at the end of the day could still fuck up bodies. And with no powers other than my katana, yeah, I needed every advantage I could get.

The above thoughts put me down in the dumps. I had no powers yet was walking around with a contaminated soul. I was still prime real estate for demonic possession. I wasn’t sure if I should consider myself lucky it didn’t happen, or worried. Maybe somewhere out there in the Umbral was a demon that had dibs on my body and was watching and waiting for the perfect chance and time to possess me. I had become a walking time bomb, ready to explode in the faces of my friends when a demon possesses me unless we got that cure fast.

“Reika.” It was Emily’s voice, pulling my head back into the now, where I needed to be. Emily offered her phone to me. “Gabe wants to talk.”

I took her phone, putting it to my face. “Yo, what’s up, Gabe?”

“Heard you’re still alive.”

“For now, I guess.”

I followed up with what happened since we last saw each other.

“Oh fuck.” Was his reply. “That’s gonna be a bitch if this all ends with you getting possessed, Reika.”

“Yep, you might have to shoot me if it gets bad.” He got silent. “What? It’s not like I’ve never been shot by a cop before.” More silence, I really wished I could see his face. I had a feeling my joke hit him hard. And if it did, I’d like to know why … “Gabe? You still there?”

“Well …”

“Well, what?” The silence returned. Something was up. “Gabe, you know the cop that shot me or something?” Seriously what was the big deal?

“Never mind,” he said drily. “Anyways, I need your help. I managed to get a hold of Turner, using the fae soul jar as bait.”

“Nice.”

“Thing is, this fucking snow is working to be the end of all of us fae because it’s Umbral.
